DJI drone batteries: care, safety and lifespan
Storage, charging, transport, winter care: our concrete tips to extend the life of your DJI drone batteries and fly safely.

The battery is the heart — and the Achilles heel — of any drone. Well maintained, a DJI battery keeps its performance for hundreds of cycles. Neglected, it swells, loses range and can become dangerous. Here are the essentials.
DJI “intelligent” batteries
DJI flight batteries (like the Avata 2 one) are intelligent batteries: they manage their own charge, automatically discharge to a safe storage level after a few days of inactivity, and report their health to the app. This on-board electronics makes maintenance far simpler than the “bare” LiPo packs of DIY FPV.

ViewCharging: good practice
- Charge at room temperature (ideally between 5 and 40 °C).
- Do not leave a battery charging unattended for long periods.
- Use the charger and the official hub: it manages sequential charging safely.
- Avoid flying right after charging: let the battery cool slightly.
Storage: the number-one longevity factor
A battery stored full at 100% for weeks ages prematurely. For long storage, aim for a charge level of about 50 to 60%. DJI intelligent batteries do this automatically, but check before winter.
- Store batteries in a dry place, at a moderate temperature.
- Avoid thermal shocks (car boot in summer, frost in winter).
- Recharge to ~50% before storing for several weeks.
- Do a full cycle every 2–3 months to keep the calibration.
Cold, the enemy of range
In cold weather, a battery delivers less energy and its range drops. Keep your batteries warm (inside pocket) before flight and pre-warm them slightly. In winter, plan a spare battery: you will easily lose 20 to 30% of range.
Transport and travel
On a plane, LiPo batteries must travel in the cabin, never in the hold, and protected against short circuits. We cover all of this in our guide to travelling with your drone.

Frequently asked questions
At what level should you store a drone battery?
For prolonged storage, aim for about 50 to 60% charge. DJI intelligent batteries automatically discharge to this level after a few days of inactivity.
Why does my drone have less battery life in winter?
Cold reduces battery capacity. Keep them warm before flight and pre-warm them. Plan a spare battery, as range can drop by 20 to 30%.
What should you do with a swollen battery?
Stop using it immediately, do not charge it anymore, and recycle it through a proper channel (collection point). A swollen battery is dangerous and must never be pierced or thrown in household waste.
