The DJI Neo democratised the ultra-light selfie drone: 135 g, palm take-off, controller-free flying. The Neo 2 takes the same formula and fixes its two limits. So which one to choose? Let’s compare them point by point.

Weight and regulations

The original Neo weighs 135 g, the Neo 2 around 150 g. Both stay under the symbolic 250 g mark, which places them in the most permissive category (see our guide on sub-250 g drones). On this point, it’s a tie.

The big new feature: obstacle avoidance

This is THE point that separates the two models. The original Neo has no obstacle detection: in follow mode, you must clear the path yourself. The Neo 2 features an avoidance system that lets it steer around a tree or a pole in automatic mode. To film in a forest or in the city, the difference is huge.

Battery life and transmission

  • Neo: ~18 min of flight, Wi-Fi transmission (O4 optional depending on setup).
  • Neo 2: ~24 min of flight (+25%), native O4 transmission for greater range and stability.

Six extra minutes of flight may sound small on paper, but it is nearly a third more capture time. On an outing, it avoids many battery swaps — and in both cases, think about the spare Neo battery.

Video quality

The Neo films in 4K/30 fps, the Neo 2 goes up to 4K/60 fps HDR. For social-media content, both are excellent. The Neo 2’s 60 fps mode offers more fluidity and better handling of high-contrast scenes (backlight, sunset).

Which model for which profile?

  • Choose the Neo if your budget is tight, you mostly film in open outdoor spaces, and price comes first. The certified used option makes it even more affordable.
  • Choose the Neo 2 if you want the peace of mind of obstacle avoidance, more battery life and the best image. It’s the “no compromise” choice.

Verdict: if you are starting out and watching your budget, the Neo (new or used) remains unbeatable. If you want the best possible mini-drone and film in cluttered environments, the Neo 2 justifies its premium thanks to obstacle avoidance.

Frequently asked questions

Does the DJI Neo 2 avoid obstacles?

Yes, that is its main new feature over the original Neo: the Neo 2 has an obstacle detection and avoidance system, very useful for filming in forests or in the city.

Do the DJI Neo and Neo 2 fly licence-free?

They weigh under 250 g, which places them in the most permissive subcategory. AlphaTango registration is still required as soon as they film.

Better to buy a used Neo or a new Neo 2?

For a cheap first drone, a certified used Neo (12-month warranty) is ideal. For the best experience, the new Neo 2 brings obstacle avoidance and more battery life.
