Drone over a landscape, the notion of risk and insurance

A frequent question among new pilots: should you insure your drone? The short answer: for recreational use, it is generally not a strict legal obligation, but it is strongly recommended. Let’s break it down.

Recreational: no strict obligation, but…

For recreational use in the open category, French law does not systematically require dedicated insurance. However, you remain liable for the damage your drone could cause to others. And a drone that falls on a car, a shop window or, worse, a person, can generate very high costs.

Civil liability: your first protection

Many home insurance policies include a private-life civil liability that may cover certain damage caused by a recreational drone. Careful: not all of them do, and some explicitly exclude aircraft. Check your contract, and ask for a written attestation if needed.

Professional use: there, it is mandatory

As soon as the flight has a professional purpose (video services, inspection, etc.), aviation civil liability insurance becomes mandatory. The rules are far stricter than for recreation.

Should you insure the drone’s own value?

That is another question: beyond liability toward third parties, you may want to cover your own gear against breakage, theft or loss. Some specialised drone insurers offer this. For a device like the Avata 2, it can be worth it; for a more affordable Neo, weigh it against your use.

  • Civil liability: protects third parties. Strongly recommended.
  • Breakage/theft insurance: protects your gear. Optional.
  • Professional insurance: mandatory for any professional use.

A well-flown drone almost never falls. But that “almost” alone justifies good civil liability.

In short: check your civil liability before flying, consider breakage insurance for expensive gear, and take out professional insurance as soon as you charge for services.
